「將不通於九變之利，雖知地形，不能得地之利矣」

" The general who does not understand these(advantages that accompany variation of tactics knows how to handle his troops), may be well acquainted with the configuration of the country, yet he will not be able to turn his knowledge to practical account." Chapter VIII: "VARIATION IN TACTICS"
此處之九，是在說多數。
這裡提到的九變，就是指多變之意，如果指揮官無法因勢導利，調整策略以因應情勢與戰局的變化，則就所算得知地形也是沒有用的。
所以，兵法是死的，戰場是活的，要隨時調整改變原先的策略。
